The ZScript DrawChar function was incomplete and FFont::GetChar did not always return the proper texture.
To make things clearer the OriginalPic is now only used in the few cases where substitution takes place and nothing else.
Since the entire font setup is very much incapable of handling this during rendering, short of a complete rewrite, it was necessary to put the relevant code into the places which process the characters for drawing so that it can disable the translation table (which needs to be passed as raw data to the draw functions) and keep track of both the translatable and the original variant of the character graphics.
For the varargs functions that used the Type field to validate their parameters, now a hidden additional argument is passed which contains a byte array with the type info for the current call's arguments. Since this is static per call location it can be better prepared once when the code is being compiled instead of being put in a runtime created array for each invocation. Everything else uses the per-function instance of the same data.
The only thing that still needed the type field with a VMValue is the defaults array, so this uses a different struct type now to store its data.
Calling the old method with a pointer to an array of unspecified length 'dirty' would be an understatement.
Now it uses a TArray to store the single elements
These functions are: DCanvas::DrawTextCommon, V_BreakLines and FFont::StringWidth.
This will allow strings from UTF-8 encoded assets to display properly, but also handle the OpenAL device name on international systems, as this will be returned as an UTF-8 string.
Due to backwards compatibility needs the decoding function is rather lax to allow both UTF-8 and ISO 8859-1 to pass through correctly - and this also implies that it will allow mixed encodings which may happen if strings from different sources get concatenated.
This is to ensure that the Class pointer can be set right on creation. ZDoom had always depended on handling this lazily which poses some problems for the VM.
So now there is a variadic Create<classtype> function taking care of that, but to ensure that it gets used, direct access to the new operator has been blocked.
This also neccessitated making DArgs a regular object because they get created before the type system is up. Since the few uses of DArgs are easily controllable this wasn't a big issue.
- did a bit of optimization on the bots' decision making whether to pick up a health item or not.
This is necessary because the hardware accelerated renderers will hide the problem, but with pure software rendering to a locked hardware surface, like DirectDraw can result in a crash.
Note that ANY mod that gets caught in this did something wrong!
This means that with the exception of 3 pointers the DrawTexture interface only accepts numeric values now.
Still need to get rid of the last 3 to have this ready for scripting.
The only reason this even existed was that ZDoom's original VC projects used __fastcall. The CMake generated project do not, they stick to __cdecl.
Since no performance gain can be seen by using __fastcall the best course of action is to just remove all traces of it from the source and forget that it ever existed.
This means that the varargs functions themselves are now responsible for parsing them into DrawParms.
This was done because DrawTextV made a blanket assumption that every single vararg has the size of a 32 bit integer and caused crashes when anything else was passed. It also failed to eliminate any tag that is incompatible with text display. These will now abort DrawText and trigger an assert.
can't pass it to DrawTexture with a simple TAG_MORE. (Not sure why I thought the initial tag
needed to be separate, though it did catch one case where it wasn't provided.)

major change, so I'm making no provisions for using older FMOD DLLs when compiled with the
4.38 API. However, sound positioning is still broken like in 4.28, so you are recommended
to continue building with 4.26. Also, the Freeverb-based DSP unit is no longer present in
FMOD, so the underwater effect is currently unavailable when using 4.38 until I can figure
out how to make it work with the SFX Reverb unit instead. (And on that topic, the Freeverb
DSP was officially only for stereo outputs, so I really shouldn't have been using it in the
first place.)
- Since I would like to eventually figure out the sound positioning issues with the newer
FMODs, the following have been added:
* snd_drawoutput now labels its outputs with the speakers they represent.
* DCanvas::DrawTextA was added as an alias for DrawText, since the Windows headers #define
DrawText to a Unicode/non-Unicode variant.
* The loopsound console command was added to spawn an actor at the player's location and
have it loop a sound infinitely.
Hopefully I can figure it out. FMOD's 3D example works, so I assume the problem lies with
my code, though I don't really know where to begin looking for the problem.

onscreen. In addition, it now uses the whole height available to it. Also,
at lower resolutions, items on the compatibility options menu now cut off
the beginning of the option label rather than the option setting, making
this menu useable where previously it was not.

- Changed WI_drawPercent() when wi_percents is false so that the total
display is optional, and it formats it like Heretic's intermission, with
a slash and a fixed-width right column.
- Font is no longer a property of the screen object. Pass the font to
DrawText and DrawChar directly instead.
- Doom's intermission characters are now collected together as a font
so they can be colorized.

palettes smaller than 256 entries with the shader I wrote for it. Is there
a list of gotchas like this listed some where? I'd really like to see it.
Well, when compiled with SM2.0, the PalTex shader seems to be every-so-
slightly faster on my GF7950GT than the SM1.4 version, so I guess it's a
minor win for cards that support it.
- Fixed: ST_Endoom() failed to free the bitmap it used.
- Added the DTA_ColorOverlay attribute to blend a color with the texture
being drawn. For software, this (currently) only works with black. For
hardware, it works with any color. The motiviation for this was so I could
rewrite the status bar calls that passed DIM_MAP to DTA_Translation to
draw darker icons into something that didn't require making a whole new
remap table.
- After having an "OMG! How could I have been so stupid?" moment, I have
removed the off-by-one check from D3DFB. I had thought the off-by-one error
was caused by rounding errors by the shader hardware. Not so. Rather, I
wasn't sampling what I thought I was sampling. A texture that uses palette
index 255 passes the value 1.0 to the shader. The shader needs to adjust the
range of its palette indexes, or it will end up trying to read color 256
from the palette texture when it should be reading color 255. Doh!
- The TranslationToTable() function has been added to map from translation
numbers used by actors to the tables those numbers represent. This function
performs validation for the input and returns NULL if the input value
is invalid.
- Major changes to the way translation tables work: No longer are they each a
256-byte array. Instead, the FRemapTable structure is used to represent each
one. It includes a remap array for the software renderer, a palette array
for a hardware renderer, and a native texture pointer for D3DFB. The
translationtables array itself is now an array of TArrays that point to the
real tables. The DTA_Translation attribute must also be passed a pointer
to a FRemapTable, not a byte array as previously.
- Modified DFrameBuffer::DrawRateStuff() so that it can do its thing properly
for D3DFB's 2D mode. Before, any fullscreen graphics (like help images)
covered it up.

passing renderer specific data to the function. Also added DTA_Font so
that the renderer can fetch font translations from the proper font.
DIM_MAP/ConShade had to be made a regular translation table to make it
work.
- Added Karate Chris's fix for scoreboard displaying team play related data
in non teamplay games.
- Fixed: The team selection menu didn't work.
- Fixed: UpdateTeam passed an FString to Printf.

crouching motion.
- Fixed: The keypress for nightmare mode verification appeared in the console
if the fullscreen console was open while using the menu.
- Added support for scaling down large console fonts in the customize
controls menu.
- Fixed: Joining a negative team was possible.

only one character long.
- Fixed: When players respawned in multiplayer, scripts that started on their
old body kept executing on that body instead of being transferred to the new
one. I'm doing this with general pointer substitution now, so everything
that pointed to the old body will use the new one; not sure if that's best,
or if it should applied exclusively to scripts, though.
- Fixed: Hexen's delay ACS command actually waited one extra tic. Now if
you're playing Hexen and an old-style ACS script delays it will wait one
extra tic in ZDoom as well.
- Fixed: When G_FinishTravel() created a temporary player, P_SpawnPlayer()
thought the old player actor was a voodoo doll and stopped its scripts
and moved its inventory.

- If you aren't targeting x86, m_fixed.h only includes basicinlines.h now.
- Moved x64inlines.h into basicinlines.h.
- Replaced uses of __int64 with types from doomtype.h.
- The stop console command no longer ends single player games, just the demo
that was being recorded.
- In C mode, the sc_man parser no longer allows multi-line string constants
without using the \ character to preface the newline character. This makes
it much easier to diagnose errors where you forget the closing quote of a
string.
- Fixed: V_BreakLines() added the terminating '\0' to the last line of the
input string.
- Added font as a parameter to V_BreakLines and removed its keepspace
parameter, which was never passed as anything other than the default.
SVN r331 (trunk)
- The stat meters now return an FString instead of sprintfing into a fixed
output buffer.
- NOASM is now automatically defined when compiling for a non-x86 target.
- Some changes have been made to the integral types in doomtype.h:
- For consistancy with the other integral types, byte is no longer a
synonym for BYTE.
- Most uses of BOOL have been change to the standard C++ bool type. Those
that weren't were changed to INTBOOL to indicate they may contain values
other than 0 or 1 but are still used as a boolean.
- Compiler-provided types with explicit bit sizes are now used. In
particular, DWORD is no longer a long so it will work with both 64-bit
Windows and Linux.
- Since some files need to include Windows headers, uint32 is a synonym
for the non-Windows version of DWORD.
- Removed d_textur.h. The pic_t struct it defined was used nowhere, and that
was all it contained.
